Whether it's for film & video game marketing, book covers or collectible & trading card games, you need intriguing images that catch & hold a person's imagination & immerses them in your world. This doesn't happen by accident.
I've spent years studying the compositions, the colors & the craft of countless works by the masters of painting & cinematography & bring that knowledge into each image I make, to create not just a pretty picture but an immersive emotional experience.
My design approach is simple; every thing is an arrangement of other things. Color, shape & form are visual nouns & the relationships between them are the verbs; utilizing this visual grammar one can communicate any story imaginable.
By breaking down the great design that is already in existence, I use meta-creativity (being creative about creativity), metaphor, shape language & an iterative design process to create concepts with the right balance between innovation & relevance necessary in the entertainment industry.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then what are a whole series of pictures worth?
From George Lucas hiring Ralph McQuarry to create the images that would eventually become Star Wars to Neill Blomkamp releasing the concept art that got Alien 5 the go ahead, images have been used as an inexpensive and rapid method to prototype, explore and build high concept worlds & ideas and get projects greenlit. Intellectual properties are where we bring it all together into an exciting whole.
I decided to follow my passion for art three years ago at the age of thirty nine. Quitting my day job as foreman at a design build firm, I dove straight into freelance illustration and have never looked back.
My client list includes Paizo, Alderac, Catalyst, Topps, Onyx Path and many more and I have worked on such projects as Pathfinder, Shadowrun and Legend of the Five Rings.
I am trained in both traditional and digital methods and use whatever tools and techniques necessary to make the best image possible.
Digital painting, 3D modeling and rendering, and photography are all combined using an understanding of artistic fundamentals to attain the specific look and style of the end product.
The lion's share of my work is done in Adobe Photoshop, and occasionally Painter and Gimp. I also utilize 3D Studio Max and SketchUp for 3D modeling, Mental Ray, iRay and Keyshot for rendering, and I'm constantly shooting photos when I'm not working for reference and inspiration. I am currently integrating ZBrush into my workflow as well.
